As Above, So Below / Opening Sept.14 @ Shulamit Nazarian, L.A.

Shulamit Nazarian is pleased to present As Above, So Below, a solo exhibition of new sculptures by Brooklyn-based artist Reuven Israel, marking the artist's first solo presentation in Los Angeles.

In this new body of work, Israel continues his sculptural practice that directly engages with form and color, drawing from myriad cultural references that range from religious monuments to science fiction. These sources amalgamate into autonomous abstract sculptures that simultaneously feel familiar--due to the employment of a rich range of signifiers--yet unhinged to any particular context.

BENE •F• ACTION

JANUARY 21 – FEBRUARY 13, 2016

OPENING RECEPTION: JANUARY 21 6–8PM

Andrea Meislin Gallery is proud to announce “bene•f•action” a benefit exhibition to support the Master of Fine Arts (MFA) program at Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design in Jerusalem.

Curated by Nicolla Trezzi, “bene•f•action” aims to bring together two positions. The first is to do good [bene], which, in this case, means to raise funds for the MFA program at Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design in Jerusalem. The second is to act [action] simultaneously on a personal and institutional level in order to create a benefit exhibition. The exhibition showcases work by fifteen internationally acclaimed artists, who are connected either to the head of the program, the program itself, or to the Friends of Bezalel in New York. The diverse practices and inquiries brought together in this show can be viewed as parallel undertakings to the educational philosophy and to artistic endeavors that are at the heart of the MFA program.

PARTICIPATING ARTISTS: Ilit Azoulay, Shai Azoulay, Matteo Callegari, Ann Craven, Peter Halley, John Henderson, Reuven Israel, Alex Katz, Esther Kläs, Ido Michaeli, Joseph Montgomery, Joshua Neustein, Adam Pendleton, Halsey Rodman, Jan Tichy and Sharon Ya'ari

About the MFA program: Bezalel’s MFA program was established in 1997. The Master’s degree in Fine Arts consists of an integrated activity that includes a personal studio project, theoretical studies, group discussions and meetings with leading artists, researchers, critics and curators from Israel and from abroad. The program was and is taken by young artists engaged in painting, sculpting, video, photography, cinematography, architecture and visual communication as well as other fields. It employs different formats of cooperation and knowledge exchange with similar institutions around the world. The program aspires to qualify high-level artists and prepare them to fit into and contribute to the Israeli and international art world and to function successfully in it. The program operates as a laboratory for new ideas and it nurtures personal creativity, encouraging dialogues among its participants, while emphasizing excellence and involvement in the discourse and practice of artistic and cultural life in Israel in its broadest sense.
